Transferring a Domain to HostGrower

Last updated: April 10, 2026

If you already own a domain registered with another provider, you can transfer it to HostGrower to manage everything — hosting, email, DNS, and renewals — from one place. Transfers are free for many extensions, and your website and emails remain live throughout the process.

Before You Start

Before initiating a transfer, make sure the following conditions are met at your current registrar:

  • The domain has been registered for at least 60 days (ICANN policy for most extensions)
  • The domain is not expired or suspended
  • You have access to the email address on the domain's WHOIS record, as a confirmation email will be sent there

Transferring a .com, .net, .org or Other gTLD

  1. Unlock your domain at your current registrar — log in to your current provider and disable the transfer lock on your domain, sometimes called "Registrar Lock"
  2. Request your EPP authorisation code — ask your current registrar for the EPP (authorisation) code for your domain. This is required to approve the transfer
  3. Start the transfer in My HostGrower — log in to My HostGrower, go to Transfer Domain Names, enter your domain name, and click Search
  4. Add to basket and complete checkout — select your domain from the results, add it to your basket, and complete the order
  5. Approve the transfer via email — a confirmation email will be sent to the domain's administrative contact address. Follow the link in that email and enter your EPP code to approve the transfer
  6. Transfer completes automatically — once approved, the transfer will be finalised within 5 days. You will receive a confirmation email once it is complete
Your site stays live. During the transfer period, your website and emails will remain fully operational. The transfer only moves management of the domain — nothing is disrupted on your end.

Transferring a .uk, .co.uk or Other UK Domain

UK domains (.uk, .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .ltd.uk) work differently — they use an IPS Tag system managed by Nominet rather than EPP codes.

  1. Log in to your current registrar and locate the IPS Tag / Registrar Tag setting for your domain
  2. Change the IPS Tag to STACK
  3. Once the tag is updated, log in to My HostGrower and go to Transfer Domain Names to complete the order
UK domains transfer instantly. Unlike gTLDs which can take up to 5 days, .uk domains appear in your My HostGrower account straight away once the IPS Tag has been updated — no waiting period required.
Wrong IPS Tag? If you click Transfer to Us on the domain search page and see a message that the domain is not on HostGrower's tag, it means the IPS Tag at your current registrar has not yet been updated to STACK. Contact your current registrar to make that change before proceeding.

Transfer Fees

Transfers are free for a number of extensions, including .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .ltd.uk, .au, .com.au, .org.au, .co.za, .ch, .li, and .is. For these extensions, you simply renew at HostGrower's standard rate going forward — the transfer itself costs nothing.

For all other extensions, a transfer fee applies. You can check the transfer fee for any extension by visiting hostgrower.com/domains and expanding the full TLD price table. If you are unsure whether your domain qualifies for a free transfer, contact the support team and they will confirm.

How Long Does a Transfer Take?

  • UK domains (.uk, .co.uk, etc.) — instant, once the IPS Tag is updated to STACK
  • .com, .net, .org and most other extensions — up to 5 days, depending on how quickly you approve the confirmation email and how fast the registry processes the request
